The University of Western Australia (UWA) is located on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, only 3 miles from the Central Business District (CBD) and about 4 miles from the Indian Ocean. The self-contained UWA campus is widely renowned for the beauty of its traditional architecture and lush gardens. With cafés, libraries, sporting facilities, an art gallery, museums and a range of shops, UWA feels like a small town with a electric social atmosphere.
UWA is very accessible to public transportation and allows easy access to local beaches, the Perth city center and Kings Park. The port city of Fremantle is just 10 minutes by car and 25 minutes by public transport.
Students can choose from more than 70 organizations and societies and over 30 sporting clubs such as the Underwater Club, Outdoor Club and the Rowing Club. The UWA Outdoor Club is one of the most popular clubs on campus and is a great way for study-abroad students to experience the stunning natural environment of Perth and Western Australia. Members of the club participate in various activities such as rock-climbing, kayaking, windsurfing and hiking. New people, new adventures, and great times are waiting for beginners as well as experienced adventurers who join the club. The UWA Student Guild, which is the oldest student guild in Australia, organizes countless activities such as the Guild Ball, weekly entertainment at the Tavern, a campus band and DJ competition, and clubs ranging from UWA Surfriders to Solid Gold, the funkiest club on campus.
Students attending UWA are typically housed at one of the University’s excellent residential colleges within walking distance of campus. Off-campus housing managed by Study Australia is also available in the port city of Fremantle.
Our semester participants have enjoyed exclusive organized trips as an optional way to enhance their study abroad experience. Over 50% of our participants joined Study Australia on a pre-semester trip last semester. Past trip destinations and options include:
