Global Service Learning

Study Australia’s global service-learning program offers students a unique opportunity to combine service initiatives that meet community and business needs with course curriculum that will ultimately enrich their study abroad experience. Through service learning students will become active participants in their host location, engaging with members of the community, and developing skills that will ultimately make them more responsible global citizens.

Programs

Through Study Australia, students can participate in both semester and short-term service learning programs. Service learning programs are focused on matching student skills to community needs while enhancing cultural awareness, building leadership skills, and empowering students to take on new roles as learners and community problem solvers.

Short-term Programs

Short-term programs are available during both the winter/J-term and summer term in partnership with the University of Notre Dame Australia at the Sydney campus lasting approximately 3 – 6 weeks, and often involving a university partnership with an institution outside of the country where the service learning unit takes place.

Semester Program

Students studying abroad at the University of Notre Dame Australia and Bond University can participate in a service-learning course as part of their semester course load. Students studying abroad at other universities in Sydney and Perth can also participate in these programs for credit with the approval of both home and host institutions.

Community Partners

All Study Australia service-learning programs are conducted in partnership with organizations and individuals who are members of the local community.

It is the firm belief of our service-learning staff that together with our community partners we become co-teachers and co-learners in the experience and that through partnership we have the greatest opportunity to achieve outcomes that are of true mutual benefit.

Spring 2010 Course

For the Spring 2010 term, students attending the University of Notre Dame Sydney will have the oppourtunity to complete a service learning course titled "Social Justice, Service Learning and Community Engagement." This unit is designed to introduce students to the concepts and practice of service learning.  It enables students to put into practice those values, beliefs and concepts which are emphasised in the course of academic study. Service learning provokes personal development, and ‘experiential learning’ - in this case through experiencing and learning from the very act of ‘service’. Service is a rich concept but might be expressed via ‘shorthand’ as ‘assisting others relatively selflessly'. Download a course handbook here.

Bond University will offer four service-learning projects for Spring 2010. Each course is designed to apply classroom skills with "real-world needs." By engaging with the local community, students gain valuable work experience and enjoy the value of giving back. Student projects are integrated with specific educational needs, thus some students will design computer programs, create marketing materials, or engage in making outreach materials. The four courses offered for Spring 2010 include Organisational Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Negotiation, and Managing People.

More information about the course content can be obtained by contacting the Study Australia office.
