Townsville

Nestled on the banks of the Ross River, Townsville is Australia’s largest tropical city with a population of 160,000 and is an important commercial and administrative center and port. The city center is fronted by a beachside promenade lined with restaurants, cafés, pools and parks. It is an industrial city that serves as the center for the surrounding mining, agricultural and pastoral industries and is a convenient access point for those looking to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Townsville is also the headquarters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Magnetic Island is just offshore and features rocky coves, sheltered beaches and a rich variety of wildlife. Townsville is located in the dry tropics and features hot summers, warm winters and 320 days of sunshine a year.

Cairns

Cairns (pronounced ‘Cans’) is the northernmost city in Queensland and is the main access point for the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Tropical Rainforest, Cape Tribulation and the Atherton Tablelands, making it a major tourist destination. Cairns also serves as an international port and the center for surrounding agricultural industries. Cairns has two distinct seasons; a moderate winter with warm temperatures and low rainfall, and summer with higher temperatures, humidity and rainfall.
