WollongongOnly 55 miles south of Sydney, Wollongong is the state’s third-largest city with a population of 225,000. It appeals to students looking for a lower cost and smaller city environment, but who want easy access to a major city. Sydney is 60 minutes by car and 90 minutes by train. Wollongong lies along the coast of New South Wales and has good surf beaches and beautiful hinterland. The city center and beaches are pleasantly low-rise and low-key, and a large student population makes the town center a lively place. The Nan Tien Temple, located in Wollongong, is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere and is a peaceful place among the industrial complexes in the area. Wollongong is part of the Illawarra Region. The name Illawarra refers to the hills behind the city (the Illawarra Escarpment) and the coastal Lake Illawarra to the south. The hills provide a fine backdrop to the city and great views over the coast. The area is surrounded by national parks, and many tracks and pathways have been developed to access the beautiful scenery. |
