Contemporary Issues in International Public Health2008 Program Dates: June 13 - July 3 Highlights
The ProgramThe 3-credit program comprises lectures, industry case studies, workshops, guest speakers, field excursions and travel throughout the most spectacular areas of the country. It will provide students with a uniquely engaging and enriching way of learning about public health from an international perspective. The program will include a variety of guest lectures from public health experts. The professor will present most lectures, but guest speakers will also be used. This course will be taught primarily in a classroom setting, but some lectures may occur on historic sites where significant public health activities occurred. Locations and Guided TravelThe program is based in Sydney, which has been described by the American Travel and Leisure Magazine as the ‘best city in the world’, Sydney has something exciting and captivating for everyone. Set around a magnificent harbor are such world-famous icons as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and an Opera House which has been awarded ‘the building of the 20th century’ by the Guggenheim Institute. Cairns will be the last stop of the program where students can experience Tropical North Queensland, which include the superb Daintree rainforest and the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Optional excursions will also be available on weekends. Our local staff will provide more information upon arrival. AccommodationsStudents will be accommodated in fully furnished apartments while in Sydney. They are ideally situated for easy access to Bondi Beach (5-10 minute bus ride), the Notre Dame Australia Sydney campus, and the city center. The units also come with cable television, air-conditioning, internal laundry with washer and dryer, landline phone service, weekly cleaning service, linens, towels, on-site building management, 24-hour security access, and enclosed balconies with city or harbor views. The complex also has a lap pool, exercise room, spa, basketball courts, sauna, virtual golf center, and tennis courts. Program Fee2008 program fee is $3,750 plus an estimated $1,400 for international airfare. The program fee includes all accommodation, comprehensive arrival orientation, ground transportation, academic credit from the University of Notre Dame Australia, various excursions and tours, entrance fees to National Parks, cultural centers, etc. and some meals. Students will incur additional costs for personal spending, meals and extra travel. A full itinerary is provided upon application to the program. TravelInternational air travel is organized through Qantas Airways. Packages have been designed to allow students to spend time in the tropical north of Australia on the Great Barrier Reef at the completion of each program, or in a host of destinations such as New Zealand or Hawaii on their return to the US, at little or no extra cost. Upon application participants will be provided complete airfare details. CreditParticipants in the program are able to obtain credits through universities and colleges in the United States. This program is approved by the University of Notre Dame Australia and students will receive their grades on a University of Notre Dame Australia transcript. Credit transfer (generally 3 to 4 U.S. credits) is subject to home institution regulations so please consult your academic advisor for guidance. Study Australia will provide all documentation to institutions to assist in credit transfer. Admissions Requirements and ApplicationStudents should be currently enrolled at an approved degree-granting institution of higher education. There are no pre-requisites required. Interested students can apply on-line or download the Study Australia application. There is a $30 application fee. In addition, after acceptance there is a $500 deposit. The deposit is fully refundable, less a $75 administrative fee, should students withdraw by April 10, 2008. After April 10, 2008, the deposit is not refundable. Application Deadline: Applications are assessed on a rolling basis until all 30 spots are filled. We suggest interested students apply by April 15, 2008, to avoid disappointment. However, all 30 spots could fill before the deadline. A pre-departure package for the program will be sent to the applicant once accepted into the program. |
