Sydney Summer Internship Program

The Program

June 16 - July 31, 2010 (6 week internship program)

Study Australia currently offers several types of internship placements for students interested in gaining valuable work experience in Australia. The Study Australia Sydney Internship Program will give students and recent college graduates entry into Australia's leading organizations and ensure that they receive training compatible with their employment and/or educational history.

The internships are unpaid positions with Sydney-based companies and organizations with approximately 36 - 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday for 6 weeks. Students are placed in positions related to their major area of study and/or interests.

Work placements are an invaluable learning experience for students from all academic disciplines. Placements are not administrative support for the workplace, so interns do not spend all of their time answering phones, photocopying or making coffee (although some of these tasks may be required occassionally). All internships are project-based, meaning that students will work on a specific project for the duration of the internship.

Interns gain valuable insight not only into their fields of study, but into the Australian business and cultural environment. We hope that students will become a part of the workplace and learn more about Australian people and practices.

Finally, work experience is always a valuable addition to students resumes and could potentially improve employment opportunities upon graduation.

Orientation

All interns will be given a 2-day orientation upon arrival, on June 18 - 19, that consists of the following features:

  • Airport Reception and Pickup
  • Assistance moving into housing
  • Sydney city tour
  • Brief familiarization with your local area (shopping, internet cafes, etc)
  • Transportation and directions/advice on how to get to your internship placement location
  • General tips and advice on living and working in Australia, including information on internet, telephone and cell phone usage.
  • Q&A session with Study Australia Resident Director
  • Internship session to help participants understand Australian workplace issues and protocol.

Accommodation

Students will be housed in exceptional fully-furnished apartments in Sydney for the duration of the program. The apartments are close to public transportation for commuting to work and the city. The building is also a short (7-minute) bus ride to famous Bondi Beach.

Apartments have either a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and City Skyline, which takes in the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House or views of the ocean across to Bondi Beach and/or Botany Bay in the distance.

Each apartment has been spaciously designed with quality fittings including a full-sized, equipped kitchenette with granite bench tops and microwave, internal laundry with washing machine and dryer, large dinning/lounge areas, enclosed balcony, television, CD player, cable TV, telephone and voice mail.

Students will also have access to an indoor heated lap pool, spa, sauna, fully equipped gym, 2 tennis courts with racquet and ball hire, billiard room and outdoor BBQ area.

Program Fee

The program fee is USD$2,440* without housing and USD$4,290* with housing.
*Program fee is subject to change. Program fees will be finalized four months before the program start date.

The program fee includes the following:

Travel

Due to the flexible nature of the internship program, Study Australia does not include the costs of traveling to Australia. Study Australia does provide significant airfare advice and will organize an optional group flight for all participants, group size permitting. Generally the tickets we recommend save interns hundreds of dollars off normal fares and offer international and domestic stopovers on either leg of their journey. Popular stop-overs include Hawaii, Fiji and New Zealand.

Study Australia also maintains close working relationships with knowledgeable travel providers in Australia who provide students with tips and suggestions for independent travel. Australia and the entire South Pacific region (most notably New Zealand, Southeast Asia and other Pacific islands) offer amazing travel options for students before or after their internship.

Admission Requirements and Application

All applicants are expected to have an appropriate academic background or work experience related to their intended placement duties. The amount of required coursework will vary for each placement. Generally speaking, students who have completed at least two years of university and have grade point averages above 2.5 will be eligible for most internships. All students are encouraged to apply, as many non-academic factors are taken into consideration.

The program is limited to 40 participants and applicants are admitted on a rolling basis. The application deadline for the Sydney Summer Internship Program is February 15, 2010. If the application deadline has passed for the program you are interested in, please call 800.585.9658 for further information.
